For most kids, 12 is an awkward age, but for kids in El Salvador during the nation’s civil war, turning 12 was frightening.

At this age, boys were forcefully recruited into the government’s army or, with no other choice, were swept into the guerilla forces. Children were separated from their families and became victims of a war they did not start.
